The "get plastic surgery, do makeup, present yourself very specifically with tons of cosmetics" type thing is present among many people whether transgender or not. It is seen as a given nowadays that transitioning involves surgery and hormones, but does it have to be that way?
I have a difficult to describe view on the topic, on the one hand, people who tell you that you must fit into traditional gender roles, present yourself a certain way etc are authoritarians and should probably fuck off and die. However, we can start by looking at transgender people where they are encouraged to get surgery and hormones, puberty blockers, I've seen some get tons of plastic surgery and so on. That can't be healthy, but upon closer examination I find this isn't exclusive to trans people.
